Socialists in Scotland have stated that green politics must be anti-capitalist, and that they do not trust the Conservatives or other political leaders attending Cop26 to address the environmental issue. The Campaign for Socialism (CfS) has laid out its case ahead of next month’s global climate conference in Glasgow, calling for Labour to support an anti-capitalist response to the environmental catastrophe.
The organization, which campaigns for left-wing policies inside the Scottish Labour Party and the Scottish Labour Movement, stated that the battle for socialist policies is more vital than ever. “The staging of Cop26 in Glasgow this November will push the debate about the environment to the top of the political agenda in Scotland. This will be a chance to advocate and garner support for socialist green politics, which will include labour movement direct action in the tradition of trade union green bans and workers’ alternative plans for socially beneficial production in the tradition of the Lucas Aerospace alternative plan,” CfS stated in a recent statement.
“As socialists active in the Labour Party, we believe that green politics must be anti-capitalist in nature and, as a result, we have no faith in the political leaders attending Cop26 to resolve the environmental crisis,” the group added. CfS also cautioned that prior UN climate negotiations had resulted in inactivity and failure, urging the labour movement to draw inspiration and learn from the environmental movement’s direct action campaigning.
“CfS is committed to working with labour movement bodies and campaigns during and after Cop26 to highlight the need for a socialist anti-capitalist response to the environmental crisis. We also pledge to support the protests, school student strikes, other strikes, direct action, and civil disobedience that will occur during Cop26,” the group further added.
